Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Sixty82 is a builder of aluminum constructions for stages based in Drachten, Netherlands. In 2022, it decided to bring back to the Netherlands the production that had previously outsourced to a Polish supplier. The decision to bring production back home is driven by misunderstandings with the offshoring partner that emerged during the Corona crisis (canceled orders, unexplained price increases) and rising transport costs. Sixty82 is maintaining its relationship with its Polish supplier, but it plans to gradually bring production back to the Netherlands. The company aims to lower transport costs, enhance flexibility, achieve fast production, and improve quality control. A long-term goal is to establish its own factory, investing in automation and robotization. In the meantime, the production of parts will be outsourced domestically and assembled in-house.
