Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Nobi is a tech company based in the Netherlands. It was founded in 2018 and is specialized in AI-based smart lamps for fall detection and vital function monitoring. From 2023, it decided to reshore all assembly operations, including the electronics assembly, from China to Aartselaar in Flanders, where it also develop innovation and prototypes. The CEO indicated cost-effectiveness of local production in Flanders compared to China as a primary reason for this shift. Nobi indicates that labor costs constitute only ten percent of its total production costs and assembling in Flanders could be up to eighteen percent cheaper than in China, with the potential for even greater profitability.
