Description

Volvo Cars, a Swedish automotive manufacturer, announced it is planning to cut 2,500 jobs worldwide, including around 2,000 in Sweden. The cuts are part of a SEK 5 billion cost-saving programme aimed at addressing financial pressures and improving competitiveness.

The dismissals will mainly be realised through ending consultancy contracts, natural attrition and targeted severance packages.

The company points to weak sales in China, where quarterly sales fell by 50%, as well as the impact of US tariffs. Volvo Cars also plans to reduce its number of factories worldwide, from seven to five. The Swedish trade union, Unionen, has expressed concern, although it is not yet clear which parts of the organisation will be most affected.

The company has undergone several internal restructurings and closures in recent years. The most recent ones in Sweden in November 2025 Volvo 2025 - SE, and in May 2025 Volvo Cars 2025 - SE. In May 2025, it also announced a plan to cut thousands of manufacturing jobs worldwide Volvo Cars 2025 - WO.
