Description
The Northern Karelia Wellbeing Services County (Pohjois-Karjalan hyvinvointialue), a Finnish public welfare organisation, has announced it will cut roughly 167 full-time equivalents of permanent staff as part of its 2029 adaptation programme.
The total impact of the savings programme affects about 377 full-time equivalents through, for example, changes in employment terms. The cuts are concentrated in the region’s social and health services.
The restructuring is driven by national budgetary austerity measures requiring €75 million in savings by the end of 2029. The layoffs stem from a cost-saving plan that also includes conditional reductions of service terms, which may trigger further dismissals if employees refuse to accept the new terms. Unions such as the public sector and nursing unions are actively involved in the negotiations.
