Description

The Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), a German public broadcaster, announced the cancellation of 76 programms and plans to reduce staff positions by roughly 133 through retirement attrition by 2030.

The cuts target its television, podcast, and social media units across Germany and are set to be fully implemented by 31/12/2027 for program cancellations and by 31/12/2030 for the workforce reductions. WDR attributes the restructuring to shifting media consumption patterns, rising costs, and an uncertain funding environment, prompting a strategic move toward digital platforms. The change also involves relocating production resources toward technology-oriented roles.

Job losses are largely achieved through attrition—positions that become vacant via retirement will not be refilled—amounting to about 133 positions. No explicit location breakdown is provided beyond the national scope. However, all of the broadcasters sites are dispersed accross North Rhine-Westphalia.

The union Verdi has criticized the measures but there are no reported negotiations with social partners regarding the restructuring.

WDR employs approximately 4 000 staff members. The broadcaster intends to continue operating its core digital services and maintain some physical facilities while reducing office space by about 100 000 m² by end-2028.
