European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a British multinational pharmaceutical company, announced the closure of its Dresden plant in Germany, resulting in approximately 650 job cuts. Production will cease by September 2027, with the facility fully wound down by summer 2028.
The restructuring is driven by GSK’s decision to concentrate vaccine production at a Canadian site and to eliminate excess capacity amid declining demand for traditional vaccines.
Workers, represented by the works council and supported by the pharma-bio trade union IGBCE, have expressed strong opposition and plan to contest the decision. Regional and European political representatives also called for efforts to preserve pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity at the site.
GSK employs 66,800 people in 70 countries and operates 33 production sites. In Germany, GSK reports 2.700 employees at five sites.
