European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Nordic Sugar, a Danish sugar producer owned by the German group Nordzucker, announced on 25 August 2026 that it will end sugar production at its Nakskov plant on Lolland, resulting in the loss of 150 permanent positions among its 200 employees. Production will cease after the current harvest in January 2027, after which the site will be repurposed as a sugar packing facility.
The company links the decision to strengthening the group's competitiveness and building a more efficient production network. Danish production will be concentrated at the Nykøbing plant on Falster.
Nordic Sugar will support affected employees in moving to other work and consult employee representatives and Lolland Municipality on possible solutions. Danske Sukkerroedyrkere, the sugar-beet growers' association, reacted critically, with chairman Troels Frandsen calling for close dialogue with the company.

Nordzucker has revised the employment impact of the Nakskov closure. Of the up to 150 jobs originally reported as affected, 70 employees will be made redundant (direct dismissals), 30 are offered alternative positions within the group, and 50 jobs are retained in the packaging department, which the facility will be converted into once sugar production ends after the current harvest in January 2027.
