Description

Gibert Joseph, a French bookseller, announced 84 job cuts as part of its transformation plan. The cuts affect its physical stores, notably the historic boutique on Boulevard Barbès in Paris. The restructuring is driven by an ongoing decline in the new-book market and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic that have pressured sales and profitability.

The company has struggled to invest in its online platform, reducing its competitiveness and contributing to the decision to close several outlets. All job losses are concentrated in Paris.

Social partners are represented by the CGT union, with delegates Noémie Hardy and Rémy Frey voicing concerns and protests about the plan. Gibert Joseph employs approximately 500 staff, so the 84 cuts represent roughly one-seventh of its workforce.
