European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
British American Tobacco, a British multinational tobacco manufacturer, announced the reduction of about 9,000 positions worldwide. The cuts target roles across the group’s global operations. The programme is scheduled to conclude by the end of 2026. Of the 9,000 jobs cut, 5,500 are direct redundancies, whilst 3,500 are being outsourced to Accenture and other partners. This represents a massive cutback that mainly affects administrative, financial, IT and logistics functions.
The US operations, managed by the subsidiary Reynolds American, are not affected by these cuts – a strategic decision that reflects the importance of the US market to BAT. By contrast, the European (United Kingdom, Poland, Romania), Latin American (Costa Rica, Mexico) and Asian (Singapore, Malaysia) regions are bearing the brunt of the restructuring.
