Description

British Council Italia, a UK-run organisation operating in the cultural, educational and language services sector, announced 108 job cuts out of around 130 positions, affecting staff involved in teaching, language certification and cultural cooperation activities across Italy.

The job losses follow the opening of a collective redundancy procedure in mid-May 2026, which is expected to lead to the closure of British Council operations in Italy and forms part of a broader international reorganisation of the organisation’s activities.

The restructuring is planned to be implemented through collective dismissals, with the redundancy procedure formally initiated. FLC CGIL has opposed the restructuring and called for the withdrawal of the redundancy procedure, announcing two strike days on 21 May and 4 June 2026; institutional attention has also been raised through formal requests for clarification on the implications of the announced job cuts
