Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ouest Bedding Hotelys, a French manufacturer of mattresses and box springs for the hotel industry, relocated its spring production from Croatia to its premises in Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine) in 2022. The move aimed to reduce carbon footprint by minimizing transportation and bring back know-how to France. In the past, spring production was already on site before being relocated to Croatia. The Adova group, owner of Ouest Bedding Hotelys since 2016, invested 1.2 million euros between 2021 and 2022 to replace obsolete machines in Fougères and facilitate the relocation. The company increased its focus on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability, favoring natural materials and launching mattresses made from recycled and recyclable materials. Around 110 people work at the Fougères factory, including 90 on permanent contracts. Since 2018, the workforce has increased by 30%.
