Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ecco, a Danish footwear manufacturer, in 2020, decided to relocate shoe production in Denmark after offshoring its operations abroad 20 years before. Ecco has production at its own factories in China, Portugal, Slovakia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. In 2020, the company declared the aim to establish a fully automated test factory named Factory 2025 in Southern Jutland. Ecco's decision to open a factory in Denmark is primarily driven by the desire to enhance production flexibility. The project aims to enable the manufacturing of a greater variety of shoe models and colors simultaneously, without compromising efficiency. The objective is to be closer to the market, responding more rapidly and effectively to consumer demands. In the second half of 2020, Ecco also commissioned a new production facility in Vietnam.
