Description
Centre France, a French press group, is cutting 152 jobs, primarily affecting several locations starting in the first quarter of 2027 until the end of the year. In the newspaper Le Populaire Centre, 13 jobs will be cut, including ten journalists and three support staff. Two of the journalists are in Bellac and Saint-Junien, that will close. 30 jobs cuts are vacant positions, which will not be replaced.
The cuts are driven by the structural decline of print media and rising costs, prompting a cost-saving plan. However, the financial status of the press group is good.
Trade union representatives from the Syndicat national des journalistes have been informed, and negotiations are underway. However, many employees are angry as this is the seventh job saving plan in twelve years. In 2024, 70 job cuts took place. Yet, only 47 employees, including 11 journalists were cut. Additionally, the groups' inter-union committee denounced the attack of journalism and it's impact on democracy.
