Description
Airbus announced in March 2018 that production cuts to the A380 and A400M programmes would put a significant number of jobs at risk in Germany, as part of a wider adjustment of its European workforce: Airbus 2018 - EU. In Germany, 1,925 positions at risk, notably at sites Bremen and Augsburg. The measures concern Airbus’s commercial aviation and defence activities and were presented at a European works council meeting.
In Germany, the impact is concentrated in production and programme‑related functions associated. Airbus indicated that the job reductions would be managed primarily through redeployment to other aircraft programmes, where workloads were increasing, particularly the A320 family. The company also signalled that temporary workers could be affected through non‑renewal of assignments, while stressing its intention to avoid compulsory redundancies.
Airbus confirmed that it had informed the European works council and entered formal negotiations with employee representatives at both European and national levels. Trade unions highlighted the scale of the impact in Germany and expressed concerns about limited redeployment opportunities at certain sites, while Airbus committed to managing the social consequences of the restructuring in a responsible manner.
