Description
Enefit Industry, a subsidiary of Eesti Energia, an Estonian oil and energy company, will close the Narva quarry, its second mine by mid-April and consolidate all of its oil shale mining operations at its main Estonia mine this year. As a result of the restructuring, nearly 100 miners will lose their jobs.
The stated reason for the restructuring is to focus on international competitiveness and increasing efficiency. Approximately a third of the 350 employees in the Narva mine can continue working in the Estonia mine, while around 70 people will be tasked with closing the mine, which will last up until 2029. This will however mean that around 100 people will be laid off from Enefit Industry. The company will provide personalised guidance and support for finding a new job for these people. The average worker in the Narva plant is 50 years old and has 17 years of working experience.
