Description
The Swedish mining company Boliden has started cooperation negotiations at its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The negotiations concern all of the company's employees in Kevitsa, and may result in 285 job losses. Additionally, the negotiations might lead to possible changes in employment relationships and temporary layoffs.
Boliden states that the reason behind the cooperation negotiations is a tax reform, which has resulted in a significant increase in taxes for mining minerals.
According to the chief shop steward at the mine, the announcement was expected because of the general situation in the mining sector. He was, however, surprised by the large number of potential redundancies.
Boliden conducts ore exploration and mining in Kevitsa, and is a major supplier of copper and nickel concentrates. It had 606 employees in Kevitsa in 2024.
