Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Privatbrauerei Eichbaum, a German brewery, has announced plans to cut around 100 jobs in Mannheim, roughly one-third of its current workforce of about 290 employees. The reductions will affect production staff as well as employees in administration and technical trades.
The restructuring is a consequence of the company’s insolvency and its efforts to secure new investors to safeguard operations. Management describes the cuts as a necessary step to ensure the brewery’s long‑term viability.
The works council responded by noting that employees were taken by surprise and that production staff will be hardest hit by the measures.
Eichbaum currently employs around 290 people, a figure expected to fall below 200 once the planned cuts take effect.
