Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Bosch, a German automotive equipment manufacturer, announced the permanent closure of its Moulins-Yzeure plant resulting in 270 job cuts at the site. The shutdown is scheduled for the end of 2026, with production potentially ceasing as early as June of that year. The social plan is expected to be negotiated in February.
The decision follows Bosch’s broader restructuring programme aimed at generating €2.5 billion in annual savings within its Mobility division, triggered by a 45 % decline in orders, the end-of-life status of the braking systems produced, and the emergence of new technologies that have not been adopted at this site. ??Trade unions, notably the CGT representatives of the Allier department, have reacted strongly to the announcement, with calls for a strike and requests for state intervention.
The restructuring is part of a global one affected 13,000 workers at Bosch: Bosch 2025 - WO.
