Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Signify announced that it will cut 900 jobs worldwide, including 150 positions in the Netherlands, as part of a restructuring effort that will begin shortly after the 30 January 2026 annual results presentation: Signify 2026 - WO.
The layoffs affect the overall workforce, with the Dutch workforce taking the largest share of the cuts. The company cited rising inflation, a decline in demand for premium products such as Philips Hue smart lights, and U.S. import tariffs as key drivers of the decision, aiming to save 180 million euros through the reduction of staff. Signify employs roughly 28,000 people worldwide, and the company continues to operate under the Philips brand name for its lighting products.
