Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mercadona Online, the online division of Spanish large supermarket chain Mercadona, is set to hire 400 employees for its new online logistics centre in Vallecas (Madrid), which will begin operations in summer 2026. The open positions include order pickers (responsible for selecting and packing online orders) and delivery drivers (who will handle home deliveries using ergonomically designed vans to reduce physical strain). Mercadona offers permanent contracts with competitive pay, as well as 37 days of annual leave, following the company’s recently updated benefits package.
The facility will be the company’s third online logistics centre in the Madrid region, joining those in Getafe and Boadilla del Monte, and will serve as a key hub for the supermarket’s expanding e-commerce operations. The new centre reinforces Mercadona’s commitment to its online sales division, which now employs over 2,500 people. In 2024, the online business sales reached €824 million, a 30% year-on-year increase. The company now operates additional facilities in Barcelona, Alicante, and Seville, further consolidating its logistics network to meet the growing demand for online grocery shopping across Spain.
mercadona already experienced business expansion examples in 2020 Mercadona 2020-ES and 2023 Mercadona 2023-ES, with the creation of 100 and 150 new jobs, respectively
