Description
Finnish stainless steel producing company Outokumpu is laying off 109 employees in Sweden by the end of 2027. The company began cooperation negotiations concerning its operations in Finland, Sweden and Germany in early October 2025. In October, the company announced that its steelworks in Swedish Degerfors would be affected by the layoffs, but it was still unsure how many jobs would be cut.
The negotiations were part of a restructuring program aimed at saving the company EUR 100 million in costs. Job losses will affect all three countries, with approximately 650 full-time positions in total by the end of 2027. Of these 650, about 450 were subject to negotiations, as reported in October Outokumpu 2025 - European Union.
According to the company, the programme responds to weak stainless steel demand in Europe and intense competition from low-priced imports, which have weighed on profitability
Outokumpu has approximately 8,400 employees worldwide. The total number of employees in Sweden is approximately 1,600 with approximately 400 in Degerfors.
