Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Aeffe Group has initiated dismissal procedures affecting 221 of 540 employees, with 140 positions in Milan and 81 in San Giovanni in Marignano (Rimini). The luxury fashion group founded by designer Alberta Ferretti, managing brands including Alberta Ferretti, Moschino, and Pollini, faces chronic crisis as special unemployment benefits expire January 12 for 500 employees.
First-half 2025 revenues contracted 27%, following 21.2% decline in 2024 versus 2023. Filctem CGIL Rimini General Secretary noted the company communicated mobility procedures October 7, explaining redundancy reasons and prefiguring potential dismissals. The sector suffers broader difficulties, with Aeffe requesting extraordinary unemployment benefits since December 2024 with restructuring plans reducing 70 voluntary departures, yet achieving no recovery.
The company presented persistent cost-revenue imbalance necessitating additional dismissals. Recent Ministry of Enterprise meetings saw Mimit requesting clarification on industrial plans, urging evaluation of alternatives to dismissals including exceptional unemployment benefits, financing, and credit lines, scheduling January 21 follow-up. However, the group expressed determination proceeding with plans, creating significant pre-Christmas anxiety.
Filtcem CGIL Milan, covering majority impacts at via San Gregorio and via Donizetti locations, demanded "greater responsibility assumption" from Aeffe avoiding Christmas-period dismissals. The union emphasized "priority is safeguarding jobs and defending two Made in Italy symbolic brands in a sector already severely hit by repeated crises."
