Description
Voestalpine, an Austrian steel manufacturer operating in the basic metals sector, announced plans that could affect around 450 jobs at its Mürzzuschlag site. The restructuring forms part of a cost-cutting and efficiency programme aimed at maintaining competitiveness in light of rising energy prices and global market pressures.
The company is currently assessing the economic situation with the help of external consultants, and a final decision on the job cuts is expected by the end of 2025. The potential redundancies are likely to involve production and technical staff, primarily blue-collar workers, with measures yet to be specified.
Management has justified the review as “urgent action” to safeguard long-term viability. While trade unions and local authorities have not yet publicly responded, further consultations are expected once the review concludes.
This layoff follows an increase in the company's labour force by 150 jobs in 2023 Voestalpine 2023 - AT.
