Metsä Group, a Finnish forest industry company, has announced that it will cut about 485 jobs worldwide.
In Finland, approximately 385 positions are expected to be cut Metsä Group 2025-FI; the layoffs will affect several locations across the country. The statutory negotiations will begin on 7 October 2025 and concern all of its business areas and operations.
The negotiations are part of a €300 million cost savings and profit improvement programme launched in July 2025. No production facilities are expected to be permanently closed, though some positions will be reorganized. The company also suspended several investment projects in Finland and Sweden. According to CEO Jussi Vanhanen, the company’s profitability has been severely affected by global trade tensions, tariffs on cartonboard in the United States, and currency fluctuations.
Metsä Board, a subsidiary of Metsä Group, has also announced plans to cut 315 jobs in Europe (Metsä Board 2025-EU.
Metsä Group is a Finnish paper manufacturer with operations in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Russia and the Baltic countries. Metsä Group employs about 9,600 people globally.
