Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Owens-Illinois (O-I), a US-based global glass manufacturer, will close its factory in Maastricht by 1 March 2026, resulting in the loss of 215 jobs. The decision follows a decline in market demand and the earlier closure of one of the factory’s gas furnaces, which had already costed approximately 100 jobs and was registered in the ERM event database O-I Glass 2024 - NL.
A phased wind-down is underway, with one furnace closing on 1 January and the final shutdown scheduled for March. A social plan has been established for affected workers, similar to a previous arrangement agreed with trade union FNV. The factory’s perceived lack of sustainability was cited as a contributing factor to its decline.
