Description
As announced on 8 September 2025, the U.S. automotive supplier BorgWarner plans to cut 345 jobs in Germany at its sites in Darmstadt and Langen. This includes 120 positions at the Battery Technology Center and 225 in the plant operations division. The reductions are planned to be finalised by January 2026. Currently, 800 people work at the sites.
The company cites the strained market situation and declining orders from major clients such as Daimler Truck and Volvo as reasons for the cuts. Employees have been informed of the layoffs, and the IG Metall union has announced its intention to resist the job cuts.
BorgWarner employs 38,000 people worldwide.
Updated, 05/04/2026
BorgWarner's works council and the German Metalworkers' Union have negotiated a reduction in the planned job cuts. Instead of 345 employees, some 90 to 120 employees will have to leave the sites in Langen and Darmstadt. Moreover, the job reductions will be realised through a voluntary leave programme. Employees who leave the company voluntarily by the end of April 2026 will receive one gross monthly salary per year of service as severance pay. Additional payments will be granted to employees with children and to severely disabled employees. However, if fewer than 90 employees leave the company voluntarily, compulsory redundancies will follow.
