Description
Azucarera, an Spanish sugar manufacturer owned by Associated British Foods (ABF) since 2009, has announced an important restructuring plan in Spain, including the dismissal of 251 employees and the closure of its factory in La Bañeza (León). This employment redundancy file (ERE) will affect staff across all operational centres, three in Castille and Leon (Toro, La Bañeza and Miranda de Ebro) and one in Andalusia (Guadalete), as well as central offices in Madrid and Barcelona.
The restructuring follows a broader strategic review prompted by sustained financial losses (and expected to reach 40 million euro this year). The company will centralise sugar beet processing at its Toro (Zamora) plant, ceasing such operations in La Bañeza and Miranda de Ebro, the latter of which will remain active as a sugar refinery. Azucarera justifies the restructuring on the grounds of high operating costs, falling beet production, and volatile global sugar prices. The ERE process has already been submitted to union representation from CCOO, UGT, and USO, and trade unions have indicated that, in the coming days, workers' assemblies will be convened at the various production sites. Despite these cuts, Azucarera affirms its continued commitment to Spanish beet growers and the national supply chain, aiming to improve efficiency and restore long-term competitiveness.
