Description
Sumitomo Electric Bordnetze, a German supplier of electronic wire harnesses and components for the automotive industry announced its intention to dismiss 676 persons by the end of June 2025. The collective redundancy will be at the Drobeta-Turnu Severin (Mehedinti County). The decision was attributed to the increase in the production and labour costs, which negatively affected the company's performance.
In 2023, the last reported year, the company had a turnover of 955 million lei (approx. €191 million), a net profit of 38.9 million lei (approx. €7.78 million) and a workforce of 5,600 employees. According to the company announcement employees will benefit of social protection, including compensatory salaries, ranging from 3 to 10 wages.
In 2022, Sumitomo Electric Bordnetze moved its wire harness production operations from Ukraine to Romania and Morocco, and in 2024, it closed a plant in Bulgaria, relocating production to Romania and Republic of Moldova, as it found opportunities in the two countries to reduce production costs.
The German company is owned by Japanese group Sumitomo Electric Industries.
