Description
LyondellBasell, a multinational chemicals manufacturer, has announced the closure of its plant in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, affecting 160 employees. The facility, operational for over 20 years, produces propylene oxide and styrene monomer. The decision follows a strategic review of five European sites, with the Maasvlakte facility being the first to shut down due to global overcapacity, weak demand, and high costs in Europe. The company recently invested €250 million in plant upgrades, but market conditions have rendered continued operations unviable. The dismantling process is scheduled to begin in 2025. No information on alternative employment measures has been provided. LyondellBasell continues to operate two other sites in the Netherlands, in Moerdijk and the Botlek
