Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

Cruz Roja Española, national affiliate of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and a nonprofit humanitarian institution in Spain, announced a collective redundancy file (ERE) affecting 321 employees due to organisational and financial constraints. This decision follows a ruling by the National Court, which invalidated a previous redundancy process involving 149 workers.
Labour unions, including CCOO and USO, strongly opposed the ERE, advocating for alternative measures such as temporary suspensions and enhanced compensation packages. Despite negotiations, no agreement was reached, and Cruz Roja will proceed with legally mandated severance terms, to be finalised in the first quarter of 2025. In the end, 125 workers will be affected by the ERE, and the redundancies will impact nearly all provinces in Spain, with the organisation citing the expiration of funding for various programmes.
