Description

The US multinational PepsiCo, manufacturer, marketer, and distributor of beverages and snacks, has announced plans to implement a workforce restructuring initiative (ERE) in Spain, potentially affecting up to 250 employees.

According to the trade unions UGT and CCOO, the company intends to transition its traditional distribution model towards an "indirect distribution" system, relying on third-party operators. This strategic shift has raised concerns among employees, particularly within sales delegations across several regions, including Girona and Tarragona (Catalonia), Castellón (Valencian Community), Zaragoza (Aragón), Almería, Córdoba, Granada, Sevilla, Málaga, Puerto and Huelva (Andalusia) and Vigo (Galicia).

While PepsiCo has yet to officially present the Employment Regulation File (ERE), the company has acknowledged ongoing discussions with trade unions. It has proposed the establishment of a "dialogue table" to negotiate solutions that align both with business objectives and employee interests. The unions, however, contest the company's justification for the outsourcing initiative, arguing that PepsiCo is not facing financial losses and that the proposed restructuring would impose undue hardship on employees. Negotiations for the new ERE are set to commence next week and are expected to extend into 2025. UGT and CCOO have indicated that they may resort to protest actions should discussions fail to yield satisfactory outcomes.

This development follows a previous ERE implemented by PepsiCo in late 2022, which impacted approximately 530 workers (Pepsico 2022-ES)
