Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Arkema, a French chemical group specializing in fine chemicals, is cutting 154 jobs at its Jarrie (Isère) factory. The company has cited the financial difficulties of Vencorex and the industry's dependence on their salt, shifting its focus to the production of hydrogen peroxide, chlorate, and perchlorate. However, trade unionists argue that this justification is being used by management to close a site that is not highly profitable.Workers went on strike in December and voted for a total strike in January, citing a lack of transparency regarding the site’s future and guarantees. Negotiations for the job-saving plan are expected to take three months.
