Description
Metsä Board, manufacturer of paperboard, has initiated cooperation negotiations that may result in the dismissal of up to 215 employees. The negotiations comprise two factories: the Kyro factory at Kyrökoski and the Tako factory in Tampere. The latter the company is considering shutting down all together. In total, around 360 people will be affected by the negotiations. Metsä Board is investigating opportunities to offer employees jobs at their other factories. Currently, there are around 190 employees at Tako and over 150 at the Kyro factory.
Metsä Board states that the two factories have been operating at a loss during 2023 and 2024, both due to rising costs of inputs and being outcompeted by Asian competitors.
The Tako factory is especially problematic as the development of the factory is constructed by its location in Tampere urban area. Employees of both factories have been subject to temporary layoffs on multiple occasions.
Metsä Board is part of the forestry company Metsä Group. Globally, the company has approximately 2,300 employees.
