Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

Haier Tech, a Chinese multinational home appliances and consumer electronics company, announced the closure of the plant in Aricestii Rahtivani (Prahova County) which employed 988 people at the beginning of 2024. All employees will be made redundant as the efficiency plan announced last year has failed. In early 2024, the company implemented a cost-cutting program at its Ariceștii Rahtivani plant, which included collective layoffs: Haier Tech 2024: Romania.
In the first phase, the collective redundancies will affect around 420-450 employees. Up to 519 will remain under contract until the complete disassembly of the equipment and closure of the plant. The first collective redundancy will take effect by the end of March.
The company announced that the decision is the result of an overall strategic review that includes key restructuring actions as part of a broader transformation plan for Haier Europe, with the aim of restoring profitability. The company cited market stagnation and a significant downturn in Europe, with double-digit percentages in some critical markets, rising costs for imported goods and competitive pressure.
