Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The kitchen and bathroom furniture company Vedum Kök och Bad announced that they are notifying 100 workers of dismissal due to a downturn in construction. In 2023, a similar cost cutting measure was made, where 100 workers were dismissed (Vedum 2023 - SE. The latest dismissal will affect 60 workers in the manufacturing and 40 white-collar office workers.
The reality of Vedum's business is that the kitchen and bathroom finishing work is often done in the end of the construction phase, which has seen a significant downturn due to high interest rates. While the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning foresees an upturn in construction in 2025, Vedum states that their involvement in the construction process, and hence the demand for their products, will likely not increase until 2026.
