Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The French retailer Intermarché announced that they will hire up to 7,000 new employees in 2025. 80% of these new hires are on permanent employment contracts.
Following the acquisition of Casino's supermarkets, the Intermarché group is focusing on "rehumanizing" its services. This includes replacing self-service checkouts with staffed cashier stations and reintroducing butchers in select stores that previously lacked butcheries. Intermarché is part of the Les Mousquetaires holding, which also encompasses businesses in construction supplies and agri-food sectors, employing a total of 150,000 people in France. In 2023, the group reported a revenue of €39.9 billion, reflecting a 10% increase.
Previously on the ERM Events database, Intermarché was mentioned when there were 243 jobs losses on their premises, in 2011Intermarché 2011-FR.
