Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Hydrogenics, part of the US-based Cummins Hydrogenics group has announced it will dismiss 100 of its employees at its facility in Westerlo. The facility is specialised in the production of equipment to produce hydrogen. 50 white-collar and 50 blue-collar workers currently face dismissal. Despite significant investments in 2019, the company management has announced it will now move part of its production to Spain, the main reason given is Belgian wage costs. Also mentioned are the changes in market expectations due to the deceleration of worldwide climate targets.Other facilities in Belgium will not be affected.
