Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
General Electric, an American manufacturer of wind turbines, is reducing its workforce by cutting 450 temporary workers, subcontractors, and service providers jobs, at its nacelles factory in Montoir (Loire-Atlantique). This restructuring is attributed to logistical challenges, particularly the lack of transportation options via boats, which has significantly impacted their ability to ship nacelles, especially to the North Sea. Of the 50 nacelles intended for the United Kingdom, only 15 have been shipped, and 70% of the order remains in Montoir.
As a result of these challenges, the company will slow down production at the factory. The remaining workforce will now operate at a reduced capacity, with production being cut by 2/8 and a halt on weekend work. Additionally, there will be no production during the summer, and no contracts have been signed for 2026.
The workforce at Montoir-de-Bretagne was already cut by 140 roles in September 2024: General Electric 2024 - FR. The site currently employs 939 workers. 489 are expected to remain after the restructuring.
