Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
KTM F&E GmbH is based in Mattighofen, Austria, focusing on research and development in the motorcycle industry. Facing insolvency, the company plans to cut 250 jobs as part of broader cost-saving measures. The layoffs will occur in the first month of 2025 as part of a court-approved restructuring process.
The company is a subsidiary of KTM AG which also applied for insolvency KTM.
The crisis stems from high inventory levels (130,000 unsold motorcycles) and declining US market demand due to high Austrian production costs. KTM F&E has liabilities of €105 million, impacting 550 creditors and 765 employees.
The social partners, including unions, demand transparency and a fair social plan for affected workers. The Austrian Insolvency Entitlement Fund will cover unpaid wages for November. Despite strong 2024 sales of 265,000 motorcycles, economic challenges necessitate restructuring.
