Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
US-based company, Amazon announced that the operations of the artificial intelligence department will be closed in Romania. The company announced that 400 persons will be laid off. The AGI Data Services team in Romania manages and validates data to power Amazon's artificial intelligence models and applications.
The amount of compensation paid by the company to those made redundant is now being negotiated. Employees are striving for more severance pay, though there is no provision for it in the collective agreement.
One of the company’s spokespeople announced that the employees whose roles will be affected were announced. The company is committed to support its employees through the transition process.
The layoff process will start on 1 January 2025.
