Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
US-based automotive company Ford has announced that it will cut 4,000 jobs worldwide by the end of 2027.
The layoffs will primarily affect plants in Germany (2,900 jobs) and the United Kingdom (800 jobs), with an additional 300 reductions across other EU countries. This represents about 14% of Ford’s 28,000 European employees and 2.3% of its global workforce of 174,000. The programme will affect product development as well as administrative areas such as finance, human resources and government affairs. The conditions of the programme are negotiated with employee representatives according to local regulations.
The move is part of the automaker's strategy to reorganize its business in the region. The company aims to address the challenges of transitioning to electrified mobility amid regulatory pressures and evolving market demands. These measures follow a broader restructuring strategy to enhance Ford’s competitiveness in the EV market and align operations with the industry's shift toward sustainability.
