European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Beko, the home appliance manufacturer owned by the Turkish Arcelik, announced the closure of three factories in Italy by 2025. According to the industrial plan presented by the company, the closure involves 1935 employees. In Cassinetta the plan provides for only 3 production lines out of the current 5 of refrigerators with 541 redundancies. In Melano there would be 66 redundancies, in Siena 290, in Comunanza 320, in Carinaro 40, in addition 198 are in research and development, 98 in the Italian sales, 19 in the Middle East and Africa sales and 363 in regional functions.
The plan was presented to the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, which did not accept it and was not shared by the trade unions, demanding a change of strategy. In the meantime, the employees called a protest demonstration against the closure meeting with the mayor of the city of Siena, at one of the three plants involved.
A new round table meeting between the group and the Ministry together with the social partners is scheduled for 10 December 2024.
Updated, 17/04/2025: Beko and unions have reached an agreement reducing planned job cuts from 1,935 to approximately 950 positions through voluntary exits. The deal, signed at the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy and approved by 88% of workers, includes a €300 million investment plan for 2025-2027 to modernize facilities.
All sites will remain operational except Siena, which will undergo reindustrialization with support from Invitalia. The agreement assigns specific production roles to each facility: Cassinetta for premium ovens and refrigerators, Melano for a new induction cooktop, Comunanza for washing machines with high-end production lines, and Carinaro serving other group companies. Workers accepting voluntary departures will receive incentives up to €85,000, alongside retraining programs for office staff.
