Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 12 November 2024, the production of the electric postal delivery vehicle StreetScooter in Düren, by the company Neapco, is being discontinued and will be relocated to Thailand starting in 2025. Around 200 employees are affected. The rights to production are held by e.Volution, a company founded by Günther Schuh, a professor at the University of Aachen. e.Volution had entered into a strategic partnership with Neapco, a contract manufacturer of electric delivery vehicles. Production cannot be sustained in Germany. In Thailand, an investor and favourable production conditions are available. The Neapco works council sees the discontinuation of the StreetScooter as a medium-term threat to the entire plant and its more than 500 employees.
