Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Colgate-Palmolive has announced that it will cut 104 permanent jobs and affect some temporary workers in France by September 2024.
The company is to close its Cotelle plant in Rillieux-la-Pape. The site which has been producing Lacroix bleach for over a century, faces closure due to declining demand for bleach products in France. Employees have held one protest but have since returned to work. Trade unions have refused to engage in negotiations with management. Despite union opposition and calls for government intervention, the company plans to assist employees with professional transitions and reclassification, with no production halts expected until September 2024 and support continuing through mid-2025. This decision follows the shift in consumer preferences and stricter regulatory constraints on bleach products in the French and European markets.
The factory has been operating since 1903. It was acquired by Colgate-Palmolive in 1987.
