Description

Michelin, the French multinational tyre manufacturer, is set to close two factories in Cholet and Vannes, affecting 1,254 employees. In Vannes, 225 workers produce tyre components, while those in Cholet manufacture tyres for small vehicles. This decision follows years of economic challenges and market shifts impacting these facilities, with both plants scheduled to cease operations in early 2026.

In response to strong reactions to the closures, Michelin has temporarily halted production at these sites until November 11 to facilitate social dialogue. A comprehensive support plan has been introduced for affected employees, offering options for early retirement, internal mobility, and external professional mobility, which is expected to apply to most of the workforce.

Each employee will receive individualised support from a specialised consulting firm focused on employability enhancement. Michelin will also provide reintegration support and wage difference compensation to ensure a smooth transition to new employment opportunities outside the company.

Michelin’s workforce in France totals around 19,000 employees, with 9,000 in manufacturing across 15 factories. Several past Michelin restructuring cases are recorded in the ERM database, with the last internal restructuring in France in 2021 resulting in 2,300 job cuts Michelin 2021 - FR.
