Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Bolton Group, an Italian food manufacturer, is closing its factory in Quimper, Brittany, which employs around 150 to 155 people. Due to a decrease in demand for canned fish and increased competition, production will be relocated to Spain and Morocco. Unless a buyer steps forward, the factory will officially close on December 20, 2024.
A job protection plan was signed on September 19, 2024, providing a transition period of 9 to 12 months. Out of the 150 employees, 20 will retire naturally, and 5 will be offered redeployment in the company’s factories in Italy or Spain. This leaves approximately 120 workers who will need to find new employment once the factory closes at the end of the year.
Many employees still feel angry and believe the situation is unfair.
