Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Unior, a manufacturer of forgings and hand tools, has announced plans to lay off 200 employees due to poor business performance.
In the first half of the year, the company reported a loss of €1.2 million. Recently, Unior announced the closure of its tool production facility in Stari trg ob Kolpi. As a result, all employees at that location will either be laid off or offered early retirement, with production being relocated to Zreče. The company's weak financial results have prompted the Supervisory Board to initiate further financial and business restructuring, leading to the increased number of layoffs (up to 200).
Unior's main challenges include low profitability and high debt. While the company has seen declining revenues in its hand tools and machine-building segments, its component production for the automotive industry has remained stable.
