Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
UPM Fibres, part of Finnish forest industry company UPM has initiated cooperation negotiations which may result in the dismissal of 110 employees. Around 1,600 employees in the cellulose fibre operations are within the scope of the collective consultation process, which commences on the 16th of October and proceeds for six weeks.
The negotiations will also address the need for possible temporary layoffs. Any temporary layoffs could be implemented in stages between 1 January and 30 June 2025. The maximum duration of a temporary layoff is 90 days.
The measures affect UPM’s operations in Lappeenranta, Pietarsaari, Pori, Kuusankoski, Tampere and Juupajoki. The purpose of the measures is to ensure profitability of the company’s operations in Finland.
The union representatives at UPM’s factory in Kouvola are not optimistic regarding their chances to influence the otucomes of the negotiations and reduce the number of redundancies. UPM however describes the negotiations as genuine and without a set outcome.
