Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Hisense Gorenje, the home appliance manufacturer (producer of refrigerators, kitchen stoves, televisions, washing, drying, dish-washing machines), announced the closure of its factory in Rogatec and the termination of 120 jobs.
The Rogatec plant, which produces refrigerator and freezer components, will reduce its production significantly by the end of this year and will ultimately close in August 2025. The management has explained that the same components are being produced at a lower cost at the Valjevo site in Serbia, making the Rogatec plant no longer competitive.
As per the restructuring deal with the trade union, the company will provide all employees with appropriate jobs at the Velenje plant. Workers will be offered organized bus transportation and a €25 bonus per day to compensate for the one-hour commute. Those who decline the offer will receive a 40% increase in severance pay.
