Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Dumarey Powerglide Strasbourg - DPS (formerly Punch Powerglide Strasbourg), a car equipment manufacturer, is cutting 248 jobs, affecting the majority of the factory’s sectors. The factory currently employs 548 workers. Between 200 and 300 temporary workers were already previously dismissed in September. The announcement follows a decision by a major client to stop ordering gearboxes as of August, which accounts for around 85% of the site’s sales. According to the company's management, DPS is facing major difficulties, particularly due to a drop in orders for products intended for conventional vehicles, which cannot be offset by products intended for low-carbon vehicles’.
The Strasbourg plant was the largest site in the Dumarey group, which employs around 3,000 people worldwide and generates sales of €1 billion. This site have already generate around €500 million for the group.
The workers already held a protest at the end of September complaining that the average age in the company is 52 years old.
